Question: Who was the Master Engraver??

Looks similar to works by Prudhomme, but he certainly would have signed it.

Ken Hunt, Winston Churchill, and Lynton McKenzie 1983

Ken posted these on Facebook and I had to share. What a great photo of 3 of the world's greatest engravers. Ken taught Lynton and Lynton taught me. Winston and I were close friends and while he didn't teach me per se, I learned a lot from him over the years and have been passing it on to others.

Thank you. Designing is the greatest challenge. Cutting is the easy part. With today's tool technology nearly anyone can learn to engrave clean lines relatively quickly. Developing design skills is a much slower process.

    Recent artwork

Last week I taught my last class of my 26th year @ GRS training center in Kansas, and it was an iPad design class. These were some of my Procreate drawings from the class, along with a couple of others I did before and after the class. I will teach this course again in 2025. It's one of my...

    dual angle sharpener

I'd take it apart and give it a good cleaning and maybe a drop of oil to smooth action. Yes you can remove the oring to clean it, but it also holds it together so you'll need to replace it.

The State of Hand Engraving Today - Questions from a Beginner

Most or all watch dials are brass and are .5mm thick. If you buy a printed dial (no applied raised indices) you can wash the paint off with acetone and you have a shiny brass dial ready for engraving. I would avoid dials that have no dial feet as they must be attached with a sticky material...

Combination of hand engraving and fiber laser

Here you go. This isn't deep engraving but it shows the laser in use. I drew the design in Procreate and lasered it onto a Blackwing pencil sharpener.

Have BSG try again. It should work.

Combination of hand engraving and fiber laser

A gentle curve is possible but a tight curve requires rotating the work as it's being cut. There are rotary chucks for engraving small items like tumblers, but a long gun barrel would require something far more sophisticated. In 10 years we'll probably be able to buy one on Amazon :p Another...

Combination of hand engraving and fiber laser

I used a fiber laser to remove the background for this demonstration pendant I engraved at the Hong Kong Jewelry Show 2024. Using the laser expedited the process so I could jump right into the fun stuff using gravers and punches to sculpt the design. In my two+ decades of demonstrating at trade...

    troubles joining the cafe

what's his user name? Every new member must be manually approved because of the havoc caused by spammers. I have been in China for several days and have not had much time to do Admin chores. Sometimes it's quick and sometimes it can take a few days if I'm traveling, teaching, or busy. Sorry for...

    New GRS Engraving system

I’ve been using the new system for several months prior to release and my experience is similar to Mike‘s. The first thing I noticed when using the new Airtact handpiece was the imperceptible travel of the knob as the handpiece comes to life with a gentle squeeze. I had to look at it under my...

    New GRS Engraving system

GRS's goals: Develop a machine that captures the power of the old GraverMax without giving up the finesse of the GravetrMach/G8/AT Create an Airtact handpiece that arrived to the customer ready to use. No adjustments, and MUST be intuitive. Machine/pedal upgrades: Increased power (common...

    New GRS Engraving system

Yes it’s expensive but a decent engraver can make that pay for itself in a few jobs. Or one job. When I hear people comment about the cost of engraving systems I say buy a bass boat or a hunting lease and gear. Or become a watchmaker where $2500 will barely buy any professional tools.

    Hand engraving micro script lettering

When you sharpen a v-point graver for micro lettering, keep the heel extremely small. Maybe .1mm but I've not measured one. My sharpening video shows how to sharpen a variety of gravers but not necessarily for micro lettering. I should play on a blu-ray player. I have streaming download...
