When tuning, if the handpiece doesn't tap or "knock" as they say, give it a tiny bit of foot pedal. Once it starts tapping continue advancing the regulator knob until it stops. That puts the foot pedal right on the threshold so the handpiece starts to operate as soon as your foot depresses the...
They are truly a great company and I am very proud of my 26 years association with them as an instructor in their training center. But I go back much farther than that...over 40 years as a customer. The founder Don Glaser was a good friend of mine and his passion created a company culture of...
The 901 is the most versatile handpiece made and I use it for everything from heavy sculpting to the finest shading I'm capable of.
The GraverSmith is an excellent machine if you want to save money. The G8 has a few more features but the same quality of engraving can be accomplished with the...
I'm sorry I somehow missed this post. Rod was a very dear friend and student, fellow musician, and one of the finest men I have ever know. RIP Rod. You enriched the lives of everyone who knew you. Memory eternal.
A bit of recent artwork and a reminder that I will be teaching an iPad class @ GRS this fall. If you're interested in learning how to create designs and transfer them to your work, this might be the class for you...
I'm a GRS guy all the the way. The Apex system is capable of sharpening nearly anything you'll ever need including flats, rounds, v-point gravers of various geometries, etc. If you are using GRS handpieces one single Apex fixture might be all you'll ever need.
For pure speed I also use the GRS...

I send my students home on Friday engraving beautiful designs on steel plates. If I were teaching hand push, we would still be on...
You might consider that the precious time spent running in circles trying to save $10 could have been spent practicing drawing or engraving. Even if a graver cost $100 ea you can do $25,000 worth of work with it.
I will also say that I've been guilty of doing similar things, so I have no room...
There are numerous watch cases available on eBay. Take your pick. A popular one is an Explorer style case which is pretty beefy and has room for engraving. If you prefer one with a rotating bezel there are plenty of those as well, but the bezel should be removed prior to engraving.
Be prepared...
Pre-sharpened gravers or chisels is not a good way to go, even if there is such a thing. They will require sharpening shortly after you begin using them. Might be hours or minutes, depending on your engraving skill. Buy blank gravers and learn to sharpen. There's absolutely no way around this.
