GRS never ignores questions like this. Tell him to email glendo@glendo.com and let me know if you have any problem and I will forward his questions to them.
I applaud your effort but you're way ahead of yourself. Stick with some very basic scrolls first. Learn to draw a perfect spiral for the backbone of the scroll. You must get that right first because if you don't, nothing else will matter.
There are many alternatives. You just have to experiment. Modeling clay, chapstick, just about any stiff waxy product that can produce a thin film on the surface of the metal can work. Some better than others of course. I knew an engraver who used Door Ease, which is applied to the edges of...
I'm very sorry to hear of your mom's passing. And Ray is a very fine fellow indeed. At 95 I'd say he's had a damn good run thus far. If you'll email me (alfano@gmail.com) a list of tools, prices, and contact info, I will spread the word on various forums and help you sell your tools.

If you're sharpening traditional gravers or...
Watch dials are made of brass and are very easy to engrave.
The first thing you need to know is what kind movement is in the watch. Let's say it's an ETA 2824 or Sellita equivalent (Swiss clone of ETA). If so, find a dial on ebay or with a google search that fits ETA movements. The next thing...
