For anyone interested, I have the entire 1924 Edition Zanerian Manual available for free download on my website as well as a number of other lettering booklets and volumes on the American Penmanship Archive page.
I know this post was from 2011, but in case anyone searches for Engrosser's...
Sure! I put together a 3-up of an original, an engraving and a composite by Jan Vanden Velde (~18mb file) (1593-1641). You can contrast the decorative border quite a bit, but that script is locked down.

That sounds familiar. Can you recommend a book to learn about techniques like this? Even just some perspective into the history/development of these techniques?
Hello! I'm still a bit new to the forum, so I apologize if this is in the wrong place.
I'm working on a lettering piece that has some washes in it. These areas of solid color would typically be reproduced as half-tones in turn-of-the-century ephemera, and I'm curious if anyone has a...

I'm just digging around this forum looking to learn a bit about engraving so that I can better understand certain aspects of historical calligraphy.
Do you have any samples of your work?
Here are some of mine.

The script is made almost entirely from top to bottom. Each of the shapes are created with pen motion and pressure in some combination. I'm trying to find a connection to the history surrounding larger engravings of this type of work from the 1600s and such. Those pieces would not likely have...
Hello everyone! My name is David. I'm a penman who focuses quite heavily on American Roundhand, (sometimes called 'Engraver's Script') Here's an example:
I'd love to speak with anyone experienced with engraving similar script about some of the technical aspects/processes of cutting the letters...
