I found when I started to cut metal I picked up on the engraving very quickly but drawing a good design was a huge struggle. I would still practice both but focus more on drawing. A perfect design cut with little skill will almost always look better than a bad design cut with master skill.
Anyone else have a Lindsay border scribe which seems off like this one? Used it a few times and hadn’t noticed till just now that the milling of the oval shape is not parallel with the shaft which holds the scribe. Not sure if I’m being too picky but I assume that’s a defect to the...
I’m had pretty good luck yesterday engraving 304 stainless steel 1/4 inch bar stock. I turned it down in my lathe to 1.25 round by 3/16 thick and made a golf ball marker. It was a little more gummy than other grades of stainless. More difficult than mild steel for sure but when compared to...
I had the grs centering vise…don’t bother it’s a pile of junk in my opinion. I have owned both a trucenter Goliath and the grs positioning vise and they are in completely different leagues. Like a formula one car compared to a Honda civic. The jaws didn’t line up perfect, when you would tighten...
I use the 123 blocks to set the height then tighten the keyless chuck. The HDPE block along with the 123 block get the height gap to exactly 1/2 inch needed for the Lindsay system.
It may depend on the quality of the drill press you get. If the chuck and quill have a lot of runout the diamond hone would wobble slightly. My drill press chuck has some runout (about .003) and I notice a slight wobble to the diamond hone but nothing which affects the sharpening or finish at...
Thank you! I was having writers block for a bit making designs and thought to myself what wouldn’t I mind staring at for hours on end? Then came up with this idea.
I’ll post a photo for sure when I’m done!
I use Steve’s mirror grave sheets, only used 2 since I started 3 years ago (although I bought 5) They last a long time. A specific lap plate to me isn’t worth it at all. I have a 100 grit and a 1000 grit diamond wheel on my drill press and a 2000 grit hand diamond stone. I just lay the mirror...
I have a similar setup although home made. Perhaps you could flip that work surface upside and attach a 1/4 inch steel plate like I have so you have a larger work surface for a banding wheel.
You can do some engraving without a turn table but gets annoying to constantly go out of microscope...
Anyone know of a resource (video book etc) where I can learn to better engrave fine hair? I’m working on this 1.4 inch sterling silver watch dial with my wife and I as well as our sons on it. First time doing faces, and I’m a bit stumped on the hair for my older son then later on for my wife...
As others have said, a class isn’t 100% needed but shaves months or years off the learning curve. I took a few online classes from Wes Griffin. Great investment! I also recommend buying some casting plates. They are a resin exact copy of and engraving. Fega has a bunch available, some good some...
I agree with monk, I engraved a few cast iron micrometers and all were very crumbly to cut, no chips just a chunky flaky powder as it cut due to the high carbon content.
Try using a light amount of cutting oil. Keep a sponge damp in a bowl and occasionally dip your graver tip.
Same book can be had on Amazon soft cover for 9$ and hard cover for 26. Search the title provided by mdengraver. For the price you can barely get a decent meal these days!
Just a thought, you could use a drill press. You can make or buy arbors that hold the sharpening disks. I bought the ones Steve Lindsay makes and got aluminum backer disks from Amazon for like 20$ works just as good as any power hone. I had a TW hone and decided to sell it since I already have a...
I traced this Winchester model 1894 for the beginning of a design I plan on working. Feel free to copy it for your own use. I will trace and upload the other views in a day or so.
I’m friends with Chris he is a real good dude. Wicked smart and a good engraver. Man has more tools than anyone I know! I’m also from Ledyard, not as good an engraver and don’t have as many tools!
You may be surprised how that silver holds up. Back in march I made my wife a necklace pendant from sterling silver. She has worn it 24/7 (even showering, sleeping etc) since the day I finished it and still looks great! The necklace itself is in worse shape since it was a cheap sterling chain...
If you would like to sharpen with the Steve Lindsay templates he sells a pre sharpened carbalt graver on his website under the graver section. It’s nice to have a visual representation to go off while learning to sharpen. No way to avoid learning to sharpening!
