depending on the alloy of 18, it can actually be the worst.. if it is a pure copper alloy, it may be brittle and crumbly, pure silver it looks kind of green and wan, but will inlay better.

Not planishing, as they would not do much to displace metal... but the aluminum cup puzzles me. Tho softer than most things still a marring edge on the hammer, were it to be used for jewellery.. I thought maybe a specialty chasing hammer?

Is the newspaper test to see that it doesn’t break off the newspaper? Seems a bit hot yet to properly consider it put through its paces... but maybe because you work pitch somewhat warm anyways?
