    FAKE Nimschke

Hi Marty, I am glad to find that you know who James P. Lowe is. He was a mystery to me. For what it's worth, I have attached a picture of his letter that accompanied the gun in question. See you soon, Roger

    FAKE Nimschke

Jean, Acid etching was used to decorate guns, even in the earliest times. Just as armor was decorated by etching, some people used it on wheel locks and flint locks but until Ken Hunt began using acid in conjunction with hand engraving, it always look rather crude. In regard to the gun in...

    Question: films about engravers?

I have always been surprised that nobody has made a movie about Renaissance goldsmith, engraver, sculptor, and duelist, Benvenuto Cellini. I have read his autobiography twice over and it would make a fascinating movie. There is an opera by Hector Berlioz but the overture is the only part ever...

    This happen to anybody else?

When my brother and I used to work local gun shows, we called the situation you described "the black hole." Somehow these folks who were all tuned up to get some engraving fell into a black hole before they got to us. My guess is that after they heard the price for hand engraving they were too...

The Art of Engraving is Coming Back

That article reminds me of the first gun I engraved. It belonged to a fellow deputy sheriff and he knew I was a beginner. Though I was engraving it for free, I still took it very seriously. Before making the first cut, I must have picked up my hammer and chisel half a dozen times then found an...

    Any mistake can be fixed

Slips, fly-outs, and other errors are why it is not recommended to cut through a finish such as plating, anodizing, or bluing. If you do cut through a finish, the only recourse is to change the design.

Help, please: Who engraved this model 71?

JJ, Emma Achleitner was from Austria. While German and Austrian work is similar there are subtle differences.

Help, please: Who engraved this model 71?

This rifle was engraved by a Japanese engraver using German style scroll. Over the years I have seen many guns that were engraved in Japan for occupation troops or by Japanese engravers who came to the US on work visas. While the scroll on this gun looks German at first blush, there are several...

has any one ever built a air engraver

The Murphy machine is unique in that it operates the handpiece via a reciprocating Bowden cable. Not having handled the machine myself, I'm not sure if the cable makes the graver reciprocate or if the cable is attached to a piston that strikes the graver. Perhaps J.J. knows as he has seen the...
