Depends on why you’re doing this stuff. Is it mostly for the experience of the process or would you be happier with a more efficient means to producing the end result? It can be deeply satisfying to do everything “the hard way”, but it ain’t the fastest route to enjoying the pretty thing you made.
It looks like a stamping (which doesn’t mean it’s not an engraver’s signature) and the fifth letter is obscured by the engraving. And btw, thanks for posting a nice, clear closeup. Sometimes people post pics that look like they were shot from a satellite on a cloudy day. You can barely identify...
Not all motors are easy to reverse rotation. For whatever reason, earlier GRS Powerhones turned CCW, which I always thought was backwards. I finally called the motor mfr and ordered the exact same model with CW rotation. I remember the gal telling me they only make the other kind for one...
I’m having trouble seeing where this graver works so superduperfabulous that it justifies the time and trouble of making one. I don’t even like relieving behind the heel for the graver i use for lettering in silver. And when it breaks, well there’s a half hour grinding everything back and...
If I’m not mistaken, the Leica A60, the one with the fabulous depth of focus, cannot be used with a camera. Something about the asymmetrical lens system…
Please tell us some more about this, Ralf. What size are these? From the photos it appears you used relatively few, fairly heavy lines? What shape graver? Are the lines cut somewhat ‘neutral’, or did you tilt the graver as one curve transitioned to the next? It’s quite a stunning effect.
A...
You would probably lose at least some of the stereoscopic view with a single screen. Various models have been around for years, but never seem to catch on with engravers and jewelers.
I thought the same thing about 120s a few yrs back and really didn’t like them at first, having used a 90 for almost 35 yrs. But at the time i was doing a lot of work that required a wider graver so I stuck with it. It wasn’t so much a “learning curve” as a “get used to it curve”, and now i use...
One of the finest singleshot riflemakers, Ed Webber of Big Timber, MT, passed away over the weekend. He was also one of the finest people it has ever been my privilege to know and call a friend. I will miss him more than words can express.
Going back to the ‘80s, some of you might recall his...
And before anyone asks for pics...
If anybody is familiar with the Leica system you might notice the focus mount is inverted to get maximum clearance below the scope and make room for the light.
The scope is a Leica S6E and the light is an F&V HDR-300 that i built a custom mount bracket for. It’s actually a photographer’s LED that I adapted because I liked the wider illumination area and the ability to mount it higher up around the body of the scope than any models made for scopes. As I...
It’s a huge beast I had custom made yrs ago. The vertical column is from a floor model drill press. The 3’ horizontal arm is mounted on the former table’s bracket. I can crank the height up or down to work over different vises and can swing a 30”+ barrel under it. The whole setup is mounted to...
I walk by this house every morning and there are almost always a few bunnies in the yard. Maybe they worship the garden ornament as some sort of stone idol.
