    Question: No smudge solution

Any transfer done with a laser printer can be made stable by using heat. That is how the printer fixes the toner on the paper. I use a heat gun after acetone transfer.

    How clear are your transfers?

If it peeling you are putting it on too thick and could be using too much pressure. I use Prismacolor markers 40% gray. They can be purchased at most craft and art supply stores. I don't know what is in these items but the marker works the same way as the white transfer magic and the marker...

Question: Questions from a begginer - From instrument making to engraving

I would suggest you visit an engraver or take a class, even just a one day class or a weekend. Let people know where you live and there may be someone that will be willing to meet and give some pointers. Also there is much information on Youtube. Do some searches, Masterengraver has some very...

    Transparency paper

I have used parchment paper with Prismacolor markers 40% gray, good results. Any time you are using laser for transfer heat the item with a heat gun or some other heat source after transfer. It helps set the transfer so it doesn't smear. It works with whatever method you are using with laser.

    Stepping up from practice plates

Check with a gunsmith. They might have something they don't need. Laws may be different now, but I was given a frame of an old colt to practice on. It was in bad condition and was of no use to him.

    drawing scroll backbones

Just a suggestion that may be helpful to beginners. Drawing scrolls, like most artwork is a fine motor skill that requires that the hand and brain work together much like handwriting. Having taught penmanship and some calligraphy to younger students and watch them try very hard in a very...

Question: Templates for Knife Scale Designs?

If you can scan the shape of the knife into the computer. Make an outline or tracing of the shape and enlarge it 200 to 300%. Look at examples of engraving and practice drawing. You will draw many examples before you get one you like. Once you get one you want to try on a practice plate...

    Work holding

Polymorph Plastic is an alternative to Thermo-Loc. Polymorph can be purchased on Amazon as well as other sources. It comes in a bag of plastic beads that will soften and come together when placed in water of 140 degrees. It then can be molded into any shape and when cools it will become a...

    One year of engraving

Beautiful! It is obvious that you came into the engraving community with artistic skill that had been developed beforehand. It shows that there is a natural talent as well.

    Unusual detail marks

I'm no expert and cannot give you an answer. However, I like the style of engraving, the way the liner was used to shade background as well as the three dots. I am going to try them on a practice plate and make them large enough to be noticed. The use of three dots was very common in medieval...

    transfer on stainless

It is difficult to transfer on items that have a high polish. Sometimes it needs a little rub with something like a 320 paper and then clean with acetone. Also try a little heat to the stainless before you transfer. If you have a buffer you might try high polish on other objects to see if...

    Homemade Engraving Machine

The engraver machines made from small compressors need to be maintained by taking them apart frequently. The rubber rings will come apart after 40 or 50 hours of use if you don't clean and lubricate them.

    Thermo-loc

In my opinion, heating thermo-loc in a microwave causes uneven heating. This uneven heating causes hot spots and when it gets too hot it becomes sticky and difficult to remove from the teflon sheet. It can also stick to skin and cause burns. I have had good luck using modeling clay to hold...
