    Garage news: mini hagn underway

Reto has been an outstanding 'maker for many years! Lee if you bring this to Vegas you best bring a large bottle of Renaissance wax...as it will get drooled upon much.

    finish's

No additions JJ just straight out of the bottle. Wipe it on (with a q-tip) keeping it moist until the blue fades out then rinse under hot water. Repeat until satisfied. Rubbing with a non abrasive (Pink Pearl type) eraser if needed then two coats of Renaissance wax blackened with lamp black...

Never had that problem JJ. Here is a sculpted scene grayed with Naval Jelly. No damage to the details.

    finish's

I have never tried the tb cleaner though I know of other engravers who also use it. The Naval Jelly does not pit the metal...if there are pits it is because the rust has pitted the metal. A rust blue finish does cause some pitting, the amount depends on the aggressiveness of the formula used...

    finish's

It depends on the finish. Plated guns can be stripped chemically but best done by a business that offers the service. Blued guns can be stripped with rust remover. I use Naval Jelly. Blasting is not good as it really messes up any lettering and also edges of the surface. There are other...

Using acid to remove steel burs

I seem to recall some such comment back when. Never tried it. I have been known to nip off the tip of the offending steel with a sharp graver and then burnishing the gold over. I try really hard not to have the problem.

    Question: Damascus 1080 and 15n20

Here is one photo...you can see the raised gold ornament on the side of the quarter rib. It has been about 25 years but as I remember, I just went slow making a few cuts to get to depth and had no problems.

    Question: Damascus 1080 and 15n20

I suppose it would depend on what design you plan to apply. I have done raised gold inlays in Damascus parts without problems but don't know the type metals involved. If I can find a photo I will add to the thread.

    Just bragging on my nephew...again.

Jeff ,what was the method to get the photo posted?

    Just bragging on my nephew...again.

Usually when you save a photo out of photoshop or other photo software it gives you the option of what form you want to save in. Don't know how to get it out of pdf except print and scan.

    Question: Cold blue

Same as you Mitch, about 35 years ago (or more) but I used a propane torch with a light breeze from left to right and painted the flame across until the merc was gone. Almost had heart seizure at first!
