Long time away and I have a Question

Ditto what Dave said. One more thing about charging too low a price. Its not only about make sure you're paid correctly and avoiding undercutting other engravers. Its also how the customer judges the worth of the engraving based on the price. Part of the customer's pride in owning this...

    Daniel Brush's steel type?

He taught himself to engrave in banknote style, made his own tools and worked in stainless steel, along with everything other kind of metal that would meet his design of the finished piece; including aluminum and bakelite. He didn't like to teach and the story goes that he wouldn't sell a...

    More practice.

To me that looks amazing. Marcus has an incredible amount of experience and training from one of the world's great engravers. He's an expert and written an instruction manual and is who you want to point things out to you that could have been done better. But to a non-expert like me, its a...

    Graver Geometry - Color Lines?

Tristan I think its a little too soon to be concerned with the color of the reflection. Chris deCamillis is a great engraver but he wasn't talking to you. He was talking to more experienced engravers who do not work with flat tools. He was talking about grinding square tools to do bulino work...

    Critique Request First Engravings!

One thing to remember too is that speed shouldn't be you goal, especially when starting off. Its better to do it slow and correct than do it fast and wrong. The speed will come with time and experience. (DaveatWeirs) Could not agree with that more. And its something to try and keep in mind...

Critique Request An attempt at redemption

Sorry for taking so long to reply. That's a very fine set of dividers, expensive, but if you do precise work its great. I have the same. Looking at your plate there are a few problems with the layout. Script requires a sense of balance and proportion. The balance comes from having everything...

    Critique Request First Engravings!

Vondershred An insult to no one. We've all started at the same place, not knowing how the first engraving will come out. That's not a bad first effort. Looking forward to seeing your second.

Critique Request An attempt at redemption

I'm not sure redemption is what you need. I think you actually need a divider. With a divider you can scratch in level lines onto the plate. So if you are doing a transfer where you can see through the letters to the plate, scratch in a level line and then carefully place the transfer letters...

Marius Mellebye - EngraverHand Designs and Artwork

The first photo. I had to look at it twice to make sure the upper scroll had not been actually deep carved into the metal. Kind of amazing. Took me back to my high school art class. Trump l'oiel. I've seen it recently in you tube videos but not like this. Awesome.

    Sorry John...I didn't mean to

marc Your work has gone beyond the level where there are reasons to rip it apart. You're at the point where you have to work hard to find even small inconsistencies to point out. Now, when you get the bigger house and have room for a student, you will find that teaching someone else will make...

    Question: Graverhone/gravermax shaping/polishing

If you are getting the same lines in each cut it means the edge is not competely sharp. It may be mirror bright but if you have a scope take a good look at the edge as AllenC says, the cut is made on. If you are cutting counter clockwise that would be the right side. If you are cutting clockwise...

    Critique Request Bulino family portrait

I have to say that it is a great portrait of your kids. The few engraving of kids I've seen make them look cartoonish but yours are very natural looking. Its something I wouldn't even attempt. Thanks for showing it. Of course the question I have is that you don't mind staring at the portraits...

    Which compressor for GraverMach?

Diverge The thing about buying from anywhere in North America is that it has to travel all the way to Australia. Lot of pounds/kgs going a long distance. A lot of money. Depending on how its shipped could be a lot of time. And probably a customs tariff as well. All air compressors compress...

Help, please: Heels on different graver shapes

I went through the same problem many many years ago. Luckily I was with a working engraver who took the time to explain how to sharpen each tool correctly. Its one of those things that I think is hard to describe but easy to understand if you can see it. I recommend buying Sam's instant...

Best sharpening system // fixture for brand new (broke) beginner?

I would actually call GRS and ask them. I've always found them extremely helpful when I have a question about one of their products. 800-835-3519.

Can I buy blank GRS gravers, put them in a Lindsey sharpening template and shape them myself?

That should work. The Lindsay templates can hold any normal square graver. But there are quite a few requests for sharpening advice. Sharpening can be confusing for a beginner. Seems simple but a lot of times it can be confusing. Sam Alfano has a great beginners sharpening dvd/instant download...

    Jewelry box

Its very hard to get such a clean complex design on pewter. Pewter can be really tough to work on and requires a lot of control since the graver can sink if put in at the wrong angle. To get this kind of detail, and especially shading is amazing. To me this is just plain amazing...

Help, please: Beginner wanting to learn lettering.

I'd like to offer a different opinion. If you're doing this as a hobby then none of the following applies. But since you are a professional you should take a more professional attitude. I would recommend one of the air powered tools. I use a lindsay airgraver, but the GRS tools and pulse graver...

Trying to get into bulino engraving

Chris DeCamillis has an excellent online video showing his bullino technique. He starts at the beginning learner stage and along the way explains how different textures are made with straight cuts. I think it’s only available through Tira Mitchell’s site - engraver.com

    M 43

EH - That's good to know about the M48s. I've been using Steve's carbalt gravers since he brought them out. Very reliable but they do seem a little brittle on occasion. I'm going to need a few more gravers so I guess I'll try out a pack of the M48s. Allan
