No, GRS handpieces will not operate without the control system.

unless you use lindsay.. then you only need the handle.. but the handle costs at least as much as grs system

actually nothing operates without a control system. The Lindsay controls are gauges that go on a wall, separate from the handpiece. And with GRS and Lindsay, and now the electric system from Engraving Arts, they all need something to regulate what flows into the handpiece, so what comes out of the handpiece can be adjusted to match what needs to be engraved.

Even human beings have outside controls. For men, we call them wives.

You can hook a system 3 handpiece directly to a compressor, without the foot pedal, but it would run constantly, which is why it needs a foot pedal.
