Wish I could get them to take off like a rocket! We all too frequently have a half dozen come up from the creek and chomp on our flowers. Now that Raleigh NC has grown so much, they are learning to like inner city homes with good landscaping. They don't scare easily. They will move on if I use my slingshot, but usually just look at you if you only yell at them. What I want to know is who taught them to only eat the good stuff? The most we recall seeing in our yard at one time is 18. The little ones like to come into the carport to see what's happenin'. One of our neighbors unfortunately hit one while backing out of their carport a few months ago. Needless to say, poppa was not well liked by his kids for a while. They are beautiful creatures, but really destructive. We had two bucks duke it out in our side yard 2 years ago; we are only now getting the grass back everywhere. It wasn't the hoofs that did the most damage; it was all the urine and scat. All the extra nitrogen burned up the grass. If we could just get them to learn their proper place in life--which is on a plate with baked apples!

I went hunting a couple of years ago. we rode the 4 wheelers about 50 miles no luck . Came home and parked the trailer in the drive way. Next morning this is what I got. He says are you looking for me.

i'm guessing a blue or spruce grouse hen. blue grouse is among my favorite wild fowl, but i never went hunting specifically for them, just bagged the occasional one while bowhunting for deer & elk.

Actually the vultures are hanging around waiting to see if any of the deer are having trouble breathing.
