I'll go back 23 years along about September 1985... Joshua Tree National Monument, CA. I forget the name of the climbing route but it's just a short 2 pitch and steeeep! I'm about half way up.

You know, I thought of that when I was writing that post! That banjo was my first (of many) 'lesson learned'. I had to sell that one at a loss and buy a better one.

Weldon: That's an awesome photo!

Fellow dork Sam

ive just noticed you talk down about "cheap asian imports"
i just found it humerous that your first banjo was one.

I can't resist, this should get some laughs. Here we go back to 1986. I remember being very miffed because I very specifically told the reporter it's called a Canada goose.

(yeah, I was pretty weird) ;)

This is me in around 1974. Amazing how much I haven't changed (don't look at the avatar). My Martin guitar was ten years old. Nice Martin Don. I see you haven't changed either.

in the land of Scrolls,
Okay, here is some oldies

I was 21 in 1985 at the FEGA show at the old El Rancho in Vegas. That’s my dad sitting next to me. He met a stranger out on the casino floor, and brought him to see my work. Long story but I ended up telling him he could’nt see so good about some of my engraving that he liked and I did’nt. I unintended really insulted him. Some months later, I discovered it was John Amber, one of the most influential members of the gun press for decades, who in fact, did have severe eye problems.

This is a year later at the 86 show, Kay Lane, Ben Lane's gorgeous wife, (Ben was President of FEGA then) took this photo and kept calling me Black Bart. I wonder why?

This is roughly same time frame 85-86 I was set up engraving at a gunstore. You can see the Neil Hartliep influence in that humongous disc the vise is attached to.

Okay I know you want to see a stupid one, I am about 16 here, and wearing one of my favorite shirts from a F-14 Tomcat fighter squadron. I am not drunk, just the way the flash caught me at the moment

this is not really so old, this was taken 1998 when knifemaker Gaétan Beauchamp flew down to take some lessons from me, and you can see the contrast in my engraving setup, which is basically the same setup today.

Sweet sixteen

Here I am at sixteen, with my first made rifle. Hahaha. Engraving hadn't even entered my mind at this point.
