It did take a number of hours over a few days to get the layout finished. I started with a proper sized pencil drawing, made an acetate transfer and then scribed the general layout onto the metal. There was much "erasing" (burnishing) and redrawing to get it all like I want it.

This takes a well polished surface so a very light touch of the scribe can be easily seen and yet easily burnished out when needed. A well worn 600 grit polish works...something on the order of 400 grit requires too heavy a hand to be seen well and thus harder to burnish out, if at all possible.

And it takes good lighting. I have a 4 ft. 3 bulb fixture (converted to led bulbs) hanging over my vise about 2 1/2 feet above and half a foot behind and the very light scribing is very easily seen. The light fixture has velum paper taped over the light as a diffuser to soften the light somewhat.

That is just beautiful Sam, and so distinctive. If it's not too much trouble would love to see a few progress pics of the piece you showed us a few days ago that was layed out.

wow Sam Looks great Now imagine how much better it would look if you used magnification while engraving instead of that naked eagle eye.
Stay safe up there my friend

Sam i was saying in around about way Complimenting you on such fine cutting and precision Especially knowing how you prefer the optivisor I still use mine a lot with the number 10 lens It definitely has its place and more and more with age, so does my microscope it all depends on what needs to be done no tool replaces the creative mind and eye

Leland I will most likely do some castings of both sideplate sometime before our next fega meeting When i have a chance to make the mold will depend on when i get my next few commissions back from the the gunmakers/stockmakers. Hopefully there should be a bit of a lag between them as everyones schedule is all messed up these days I figure i have a winchester highwall that i plan on putting Elk and Grizzly bears on and a copy of an original Freund Sharps im supposed to duplicate they both should be fun to do when they finally arrive
So at the worse case scenario i will hopefully have castings for our next meeting
