If you are interested in a great looking, single-pass lined background, Brian Powley showed his very interesting background method in a YouTube video taken a few years ago at Scott Pilkington's Engrave-In. The first part of the video is on inlaying gold; the background discussion comes later.
Mike, Rex Pedersen uses the Rock Island GI Series for his 1911 engraving class at GRS. The slide is clean of stampings--just a printed logo on the back. https://www.armscor.com/firearms/ria/gi-series/gi-standard-fs/
A related issue is how your printer is set up. Many printers will print in ECONOMODE unless you tell them to print heavy. A lot of them will go back to that mode if reset, so you have to make sure that your printer is set to print heavy.
I recently saw a question on an engraver forum concerning 24kt gold being turned to a rose color by a nitride process. I became concerned about a multi-metal inlay project I was planning and I corresponded with Turnbull Restoration, LLC to inquire about bluing processes that did or did not...
Unfortunately, some of the aftermarket toners can really screw up some printers. Apparently they gum up some mechanisms and don't clean off as well between prints, thus messing up later prints. I don't have enough data to name printer/toner combinations giving trouble. I know that I had that...
Mike, You might NOT need a new microscope. When I first tried a Leica A60 in a GRS class, I had the same issue with the standard 0.63 objective lens. I had them switch it out for a 0.50 and fell in love. That is what I bought. If I want, I can see an entire 2x2 plate and I can drill down tighter...
If you want to trace a design onto the anodized metal, you can use SARAL TRANSFER PAPER. It comes in blue, red, white, and yellow, in addition to various charcoal colors. You can find it at www.JerrysArtarama.com and at www.michaels.com
Three comments:
1. Plate thickness. The gauge of the metal can be an issue. GRS has chosen a thickness that is pretty good at limiting flex during cutting. This cuts down on vibration noise and cutting chatter. Some plates from other places are thinner, which can lead to more noise and cutting...
Re: courses--check out Sam Alfano's engraving videos. I think that all are available on DVD and most are available for download from MasterEngraving.com.
Sorry, Sam. I forgot to put some quotes around the "Apple Koolaid" and unfortunately didn't make sure that the intended humor would come through. I am continually amazed at, and humored by, some who are absolutely adamant that one system is better than the other FOR EVERYTHING, which is...
Thanks John--good catch. I must have been brain dead to leave off that caveat about taking with you any printing substrate that you use other than plain paper.
Go to your local office supply, get a test copy from each inkjet of interest, and then come back and try a piece of each test print with your favorite transfer method(s) to see which you like best.
