Great point about the hand acid; acetone will clean that off. I haven't been doing that on my practice inlays, but it would make sense for me to start. I usually don't wear latex gloves, so it sounds like, once I get the wire tacked in at the start, it would be appropriate to give the rest of...
When heated, some metals used for inlay will oxidize more than others. When you anneal inlay metal, do you clean off the oxide before inlaying it. If so, which of the following metals do you clean and how do you clean it?
Gold?
Fine Silver?
Copper?
Brass?
If you go online to grs.com and look up the APEX sharpening fixture, you can scroll down the page and find the PDF for the instructions. Near the end of the instructions are face, side shape, and heel angles for various graver shapes. https://grs.com/product/grs-apex-sharpening-system/
Brian Powley did a great demonstration on gold inlay at Scott Pilkington's 9th Annual Engrave-In. It is on YouTube. Very good discussion of making the channel and undercutting/adding teeth to secure the inlay in place. Also a bunch of other subjects after that, including some design transfer...
Some time ago, I saw a reference from an engraver that made flats for removing excess gold from wire inlays, but there was no reference to what type of bronze was used or if it required additional hardening. Do any of you use a hardened bronze flat for this purpose? If so, what bronze did you...
Nice take on Mitch's suggestions. It's really coming alive. Those changes go well with the open-ended flowers at the scroll junctions to give it more of a 3-dimensional effect overall.
Sam, a few days ago you mentioned that you use the light spring in your 901 handpiece. Would you mind discussing what you get and what you lose by using a light spring versus the standard spring in your 901? Is the answer any different for the Monarch? I'm not sure if there is one for the Magnum...
In an earlier discussion like this, I remember someone admonishing everyone to leave the serial number where it is, because part of the BATFE record system to identify weapons is that they know where to look for each model. I can't remember if that also included the name. Names can be in...
I agree that Ron's book is a must-have, as is Lee Griffiths' book. However, for the beginner, the book by Ray Cover and the book by Shawn Didyoung may be a better start.
Sam Alfano has a great 2-CD video course for beginning engravers. It includes printable practice plate designs for some of the work and instructions on how to create the other designs. It goes through the basic cuts used in a variety of types of engraving, gives you notes on how best to practice...
I think that I didn't fully explain what started this question in my mind. It seems that a lot of us don't like to interrupt our engraving to fix a broken or dull graver. As a result, we keep a batch of gravers with a shape that we use a lot, so that we can lay the bad one down, pick up a sharp...
Monk/ You are correct that I personally won't live long enough to have this process make any real difference. This whole discussion reminds me of when someone asked an awarded woodturner where he got his best wood. The answer was "from widows". When I go, it will be like Christmas for someone.
I am beginning to question something that I have always been taught, so I would like a reality check. There are two basic reasons for grinding on a graver; one is to reshape it after the point has broken off (or to another shape entirely) and the other is just to make the cutting edges sharper...
The demise of shop classes and drafting classes is sad. When I was in high school, a bunch of my male and female classmates made a pact. If the girls would take shop or drafting (most took shop), we boys would take typing or home ec. We are all now in our late 70s and some of our best stories at...
Why not just have some fun and engrave or inlay MON, MAG, and 901 into the back of them in your spare time? Or a bird, dog, and fish, etc.? Certainly less expensive than ordering new components and a lot more personal. I just hang them in the same order all the time. I'm apparently lazy. What I...
