I do. I Keep a can of lighter fluid on my bench that I use to thin it. I also have a small container of Renaissance Wax, I think it might be one-half oz., which I have mixed with inletting black. I also put a little lighter fluid in this mix as well. The wax is pretty tacky by itself. With...
You might want to look at the new PulseGraver. It is sold on Tira Mitchell Engraver. Her Ad appears at the top of the page sometimes. I don't know anything about them as they are very new. They are electric only, no compressor which eliminates the need for one. I'm sure there must be a...
Check GRS. They sell a very good DVD by Diane Scalese. It will be the best source to get you started. She also teaches at GRS so look at the course schedule and click on her name. She has many examples of her work. If you can take a class. I took several from her and you will learn a lot.
I have used a laser HP 1415 on parchment paper and it transfers 100% of the toner to the metal. If you want a good dark transfer that might be your answer. I Used a Prismacolor marker on the metal for that. I don't use it often though. When I want a serious transfer I use my HP ENVY 5540...
You might try a 120 degree graver and also experiment with a flat graver. A lot of the western bright cut is done with a no. 45 flat with a high polish. The completed ring looks very nice in my opinion.
I have never used a cast iron lap and wondered how it works. I would think that the diamond powder would cut into the lap as well as the polishing the graver. How do they work so they create the polish without cutting into the cast iron?
Always know the material you are engraving. My self, I wouldn't touch anything that is chrome plated or any kind of plating. I would say if it is plated or just stainless it can't be that expensive. Look for a duplicate on Amazon and start over and chalk the loss up to experience.
I think If you check Ron Smith's book You may find that he didn't use copper but different alloys of gold silver and copper to get the desired look. It is amazing what he has done to get the different color inlays. I'm sure that copper would be OK for case coloring. But, I'm no expert on...
I would think that mixing fonts would work but only if it is done with a correct mix. Some fronts would not look good together. Putting a heading in one font and the main body in another. I did an image search and couldn't find many examples. J. M. Bergling has some examples in his book but...
I would think that any laser printer would work. I use a Laser Jet Pro 1415 by HP. It works fine. Laser printers use a plastic powder, toner, that put on the paper by an electrical charge and then baked on. Acetone will dissolve the plastic leaving it on the metal. I accidently let a paper...
Another book you might be interested in is Advanced Drawing of Scrolls by Ron Smith. It gives examples of the different types of scroll drawing and lay out.
My old printer is not doing the job it used to and I'm going to by a new one. I am looking for your suggestions. I use Pictorico sheets with Prismacolor 40% gray markers to make my transfers. My HP ENVY 5540 with 62 ink has worked fine last week but no so now. Lets hear from all you that use...
