I remember reading an article in a woodworking magazine about methylene chloride and the dangers. It suggested that the body can become desensitized to the vapors and when inhaled causes a build up of carbon monoxide in the blood. This means the heart gets less oxygen and can cause a heart...
I have been using Pictorico Film for transfers and also some sheets I purchased from Tom White. They both seem to be the same film and are somewhat cloudy. I have seen Mike Dubber's transfers and they are very clear. Somewhere in a thread I saw that Fixxon sheets are used with good results...
I have two theories about thermolockand and its stickiness. One, The hotter you let it get the more it will become sticky and difficult to remove. Two, It is my suspicion that the more times you microwave the stuff there may be a breakdown in its structure and it will become more difficult to...
I have used thermolock many times. I also use the block and aluminum bar that fits into the block that GRS sells. I have never had a problem. Using the white plastic block that GRS sells you can make a custom vice that takes the shape of the part and a hinge that will fit in the vice so that...
Nice work! Ok I want to know how you did the loading gate? I also did a Ruger stainless as well as a blued one. I found that the loading gate and the recoil shield on both were as hard as glass. I didn't engrave them.
One other thing to consider is the angle of the tilt of the graver. To make a bright cut keep the angle of tilt of the graver low rather than a steep angle. A deep cut increases the chance for heel drag. However keeping a shallow angle will increase the chance for a slip. It takes practice...
Be sure that you turn the work under the graver and not twisting your wrist. Keep the graver going in one direction while turning the vice. It may help with heel drag.
Look on amazon and find some inexpensive copies of Corel Draw on CD. Usually these are older copies and will work very well. They are selling overstock or copies that are a year or two old.
I often use modeling clay for holding. The kind kids play with. You need to make a wooden box with a strip on the bottom for the vice to grip. I keep the box open on the ends. Force the clay into it and put the item to be engraved in the clay so that the edges are secured by bringing the...
Just a thought, I never put a name on a gun and advise people against it. Why, because you never know what will happen to the gun after you are gone. It may actually devalue the gun unless it is a very famous person who is asking you to do it. Putting names on other items such as fobs and...
Another point to consider. I use calipers to measure the thickness of the belt where strap will overlap. This will help determine the space between the staple and the buckle.
You should also consider the thickness of the leather. Some belts have a lining, others do not. I have a belt to make a trophy style buckle for and the it is much thicker than most because of a lining. A good looking buckle will start with a good design on paper. When I made my first ranger...
Shouldn't you consider the size of the belt, width? That would determine the size of the window. The border around the outside could be wide or thin. I suggest that you have the belt in your hand before you make the buckle.
