    Honest Question

Just a thought or three. :) Could it be that some engravers are pricing themselves out of the client base? I personally know of very good engravers with more than a one year backlog. And one with a fully booked three year waiting list! There is work out there if one is flexible and works within...

    Deep relief engraving

If I am attempting an exceptionally deep relief background I will usually cut the outline to a normal depth, using a 90, 110 or 120 degree graver. Then I will recut this outline with the the cut falling into the background area. In tight or narrow places I will use an onglette and in some wider...

    Returning from semi-retirement

Bill, Sam W. and others, It is a very sad thing that the FEGA forum collapsed due to hackers taking it over. I'm afraid that the telephone system will be next because of constant robo calls!!! Glad that the Cafe keeps a sharp eye and a firm hand on things.

    The Walk A'Bout Pedestal

Thank you J J. That link worked for me and looked good. I see you also favor Ngraver square steel handles. My favorite too for H&C. I see for some reason two duplicates showed up with notes that the video was not available?

    The Walk A'Bout Pedestal

This is a good and inexpensive way to engraver with hammer and chisel. It was part of my NRA class demos at Lassen and Trinidad colleges going back more than 30 years ago. At one time I posted pictures. Somewhere on the forum there should be pictures of my setup. And JJ said that he will post a...

Question: How can I keep my new work space more quiet.

I don't find that a small rawhide mallet changes the feel of engraving materially. Though I have no noise problem I use it often because I enjoy the change. But when inlaying I usually use a steel hammer and brass punch. Give a mallet and wood handle a try, it's a low cost/risk option.

Question: How can I keep my new work space more quiet.

If you want to continue engraving with hammer and chisel and reduce the noise mount your gravers in a hardwood handle and use a small rawhide mallet as your hammer. Much quieter than a steel hammer hitting a metal graver.
