There are many computer controlled machines that can do that and a search of machine engraving sites will bring you the information you want.
This is a HAND engraving forum with very little knowledge of machine engraving.

I believe you can order and purchase a shotgun from Connecticut Arms or a new rifle from Sharps Company at the Beinfeld show.
And there are some excellent Custom Gunmaker's who attend the Firearms Engravers of America portion of the show that can be contacted about a rifle for engraving...
Diane, it's a type of engraving, generally within the scroll style.
You might find C.Roger Bleile, the Firearms Engravers Guild of America historian's glossary of engraving terms helpful to you.
I'm sure you will find a full description of blackleaf and most other styles of engraving..
Very hard to tell from the pictures you posted.......at least on my screen.
But it looks more like a finish created using a rotary brush.

For hundreds of years engravers have sharpened their tools by hand.
As a wood carver you say you are good at sharpening and the same goes with push gravers.
Just a little practice and if it cuts you're good to go.
And you already have a good selection of stones. Give it a try
