    O1 tool steel needs to be heated to bright red hot for forging If it is forged cold or at a low temperature it will form stress cracks or shatter dangerously .

    Foolproof heat treating of small steel parts. For punches or gravers I raise the heat to non-magnetic temp while holding the strike or tang end with pliers.     Leonard Francolini is not only a world class engraver but has a long and close association with the Colt Firearms Company. Colt made screw less versions of the SAA revolver for special presentations. I expect this magnificent pistol was a special order for Leonard's wonderful engraving.
