Question: air graver vs. hammer/push graver

i totally agree with jj. there is a definite increase in production using the air toys for most people. these, along with a couple of favorite graver/geometry combos makes for much enjoyable work. h&c or push can be done quickly with lots of practice. look at some videos, some h&c people are...

    Dashes-----&........Dots

for me, the depth makes a real difference. if cut evenly, not sure it would clash with the flow either way. just my limited experience. if you get tails going the wrong way, simply recut lightly in the opposed direction.

ceramic laps usable on both sides?

i found a trick that worked for me. apply a bit of 50 k mesh powder on a piece of paper. place paper on plate glass or other hard, flat surface. polishes like all gitout. i've never compared this way to the charged lap, but seems to work just as well. somewhat superior to the charged leather i...

#2. the shorter the heel, the better for tight curves. i never measured, just eyeballed. sam alfano advised not much wider than a human hair. btw, don't know how a bald guy used a hair as a guide. where did he get one ??

    Micromotor vs flex shaft

the dremel has its place. the dreml tools fall short because there's too much slop in the shaft. the micromotors are much better. the one i have uses fg burs, and has a .125 chuck for the larger bits.

    Critique for a beginner?

the griffiths book is an exxecellent place to start. also, practice drawing a spiral as perfectly as you can make one. no sence wasting good practice time on a lumpy scroll. most are judged by their perfection with the scroll and how to adapt it to really crazy shapes. the advice on doing line...

    Portable bench?

in the warm months i enjoy doing demos at our local park. i used a b&d workmate to do this. a perfect size for the ball, a few gravers, and a jug of ice tea. it helps to have a portable stoolr or seat that gives a good fit to how you like to work. with little effert, and even less cash, a...

    Which sharpening template?

the geometry of choice depends on what material you're using. how hard/soft ?? and what sort of cutting result you're looking to achieve. what method-- h&c, push work, or air assist. lots of variables from which to choose. tell us more about your goal. better answers will come.since you're a...

Help, please: Graver geometry to cut in depth

heating and bending "right behind the heel", i think will be a disaster, concidering the problem at hand. why not create a fake plate with the required drop in depth. try your gravers and see which one works best. make a plastic casting of the area and test away.

Help, please: Massive Steel Background Removing

acid etching works. but must be done with much care to prevent under cutting. or you can leave a bit of "room" on the etch mask, then go in by hand and cut up to the actual positive part of the image. i've a lso done this electrolitically, but the technique requires variable power supplies...
