paps, keep it I have my first try around somewhere I'll post if I find it you could tell it was a dog but. The 2nd try I filed off should have kept it. Make your plates large enough to put 2 tries on each plate a side by side comparison can't hurt.
John, thank you for your comments, I don't know where the shine is coming from on the deer antlers the plate does not look that way may be the camera angle. The lighter cutting was Sandy's suggestion too. I will try again.
Paps thank you at this point I'm just glad you could tell it wasn't a...
This is 3rd 4th and 5th attempts at bulino. The bird on the right was my 3rd try. then after some advice from Sandy the one on the left was my next try. The deer was my 5th try and after some more advice from Sandy I am going to try again on the same plate when time permits. Feel free to...
Kim, I don't know what size your round gravers are but you can grind a flat for indexing on your shank end. There are threads on this site that explain it.
I don't know about the other steel on your list but 1095 doesn't even cut well on a lathe so engraving even when annealed might be frustrating. I make some of my chisels from 1095.
I do some nickel silver on longrifles what crazy horse said is true you never know how it will cut. Annealing first is your best bet. Monk suggested lube it helps I use a cotton ball with penetrating oil. Spray some oil on the ball and just touch the graver tip to it seems to help with the...
Gordon, there are YouTube videos on how to use refrigeration compressors. The local Menards had a sale last year on the California Air silent compressor 79 dollars for the 1.6 gal. model it works great. It is not as quiet as the more expensive models but at that price I can live with it.Still...
JJ did you put the photos in full screen mode? You can see very good detail. What I mean is the Nimschke scrolls I have seen are very concentric and spiral in at least 3 times. I don't even pretend I know anything so enlighten me.
Andrew's post and Sam's drawing scrolls video should be required when starting out engraving. Sam's chapter on point errors is worth the price of the video.
Sam, thanks for all you do for this site. I know I have learned more here than I had in the years trying to do this on my own, pledge membership is worth every penny.
Thank you all. I have repaired the timing so the bolt falls just outside the notch in the taper as Mike suggested. Then I spent the rest of the day making the back strap and trigger guard fit the frame like someone who cares assembled it. The bolt was ground on a 16 grit bench grinder and left...
My next project is a 3rd generation SAA. The customer intendeds to shoot it and asked if there was a way to engrave the cylinder so the drag marks are hidden, did not know what to tell him. I looked at all the engraved SAA I could find photos of either they were pristine and never shot or they...
monk the last batch I made I added some of sam's wax it made it just a touch softer than sam's. I think the firmer wax gives me a better line. Sam's wax works the way it is but my lighting is not that great the black works better for me.
