Shouldn't 'pure' gold, be 24k, .999, or whatever, regardless of its source? otherwise it's something other than 'pure'?
As for sterling, I've engraved a ton of it and it's all been pretty agreeable, but last year I put a monogram on an old, 1920s?, Tiffany Art Deco cigarette case and it cut...
I engraved a knife with an 18k rose gold frame and it was some of the most execrable [feces] to cut that I've ever had the misfortune to encounter. The chip would crumble out in tiny crystalline chunks under the microscope. Thankfully it was virtually 100% platinum inlaid so I could shave the...
Yes, Guido, this is exactly the sort of thing we love to see here in the Cafe! Thanks for posting it. That's a very interesting piece, but I'm afraid I don't know much about it.
yeah, i've seen those, and the "first gen gravermax" would be about the same era, 30-35 yrs or so ago. a square graver will fit in the end, then it's held with a set screw. assuming it's clean and in good condition it should work fine. fire it up and let us know how it goes..
looks like an older GRS model, pre-QC inserts. can you post a couple shots of the business end, end on? does that black part come out or is it fixedly attached?
A bold hard line can be just the thing in some situations. On this pistol I used it to create a 'stained glass' effect for a religious theme. It might work well on a memorial article like your dog portrait.
wow, very nice! i'd suggest more contrast in your scroll background, but otherwise that's outstanding, especially the dog. try a heavier outline around the background spaces, then with a very short heeled graver dive deeper into the parallel lines. it's surprising what a nice clean...
Take it to bed with you- like putting your boots in the bottom of your sleeping bag when you're hunting. Or maybe try a heat lamp. Even a 100w incandescent up close for 30-60 minutes before you start working should do the trick.
Hi Everyone-
I just got an email from someone looking to sell the domain name "NorthCarolinaEngraving[dot]com". Their asking price is currently $350. I'm not interested, but would be glad to forward the info to anyone who might be.
"a scroll, for example, should exist in your head in 3 dimensions, and when you draw what you are seeing in your head, it will follow into the drawing in 2 dimensions. "
learning to 'think' in 3D is similar to becoming fully fluent in another language, when you're no longer translating back and...
Looking at the new photo of the book cover, that ivory-handled skinner is another Morseth engraved by Winston. I think he did quite a few. The piece to the left of "Sotheby" is another of Winston's, but I can't read, recognize, or recall, the maker.
Hey, Scott Pilkington! Look way back in...
Morseth blades were laminated with soft, engravable sides and hardened center layers. I used to have one around here- I wonder whatever happened to it...
