without digging up my bottle, iirc, cold blue is usually some mix of selenic(?) acid and while 24K is almost impervious to most acids i'm guessing it can oxidize the surface ever-so-slightly before the reaction peters out? somebody once told me iodine stains gold, too, but i'm not sure why...
kinda throwing down the gauntlet with that, ain't ya? ;-)
Actually, it's very well done. My only suggestion would be to make the shadows solid black for better definition/visibility. I like the idea of a softer, more realistic shadow, but in practice they will have more 'presence', or punch...
Yes, Denny, I haven't selectively greyed anything in about 20 yrs (it was all the rage in the '80s, along with Members Only jackets), but I used to sprinkle a pinch of baking soda over the de-bluer until it stopped fizzing before rinsing it off.
One of the reasons I stopped using the "blue...
Daniel, everybody here pretty much knows I hold Winston & his work in the highest esteem, but whatever your plans are, please do not copy that "P". The shadowing on it is a disaster! There are about 4 or 5 different, conflicting lighting angles at play. I have no idea where he got that, if it...
Please email more info to mitch@mrmengraving.com, including photos and what they're made of. They may or may not be engraveable by traditional means...

That is where a paper image is taped or held to the surface and a sharp point is pushed through the outline in a close sequence. "
this is basically the same process that has been used for centuries in various media, especially...
The 'point' of dubbing this way is to make just the very tip of the graver stronger, where it is weakest and where virtually 100% of all gravers eventually fail. The remainder of the face, which is more gently sloped, and the edges up the sides of the face, still do much of the cutting and...
Congratulations, Sam! While you're up there would you mind looking around for everybody's photos that used to be stored in the old Cafe system? I asked about those the other day in another thread... ;-)
SS comes in a wide variety of grades/alloys and heat treatment/hardness. they range from fairly pleasant to engrave to impossible. how to tell the difference comes with experience.
your neck is too short, Jon. you need to find a good chiropractor who believes in fairly aggressive 'adjustments'. in a pinch, the local hangman may be of service.
For years the old CCW motor was in the new CW motor box on a shelf in my shop (I can envision the exact spot), but when I moved a few years ago I got pretty ruthless with stuff that only collected dust in the last 10-15 yrs. It may not have survived The Great Purge. IIRC, I just called the mfr...
