    A bit of digital drawing

A bit of recent artwork and a reminder that I will be teaching an iPad class @ GRS this fall. If you're interested in learning how to create designs and transfer them to your work, this might be the class for you...

Best sharpening system // fixture for brand new (broke) beginner?

I'm a GRS guy all the the way. The Apex system is capable of sharpening nearly anything you'll ever need including flats, rounds, v-point gravers of various geometries, etc. If you are using GRS handpieces one single Apex fixture might be all you'll ever need. For pure speed I also use the GRS...

How nessasary is pneumatic engraver for a beginner?

Pneumatic is not "necessary". With pneumatic you're paying for 1.) a GREATLY reduced learning curve, and 2.) CONTROL that you may never experience with hand push. I send my students home on Friday engraving beautiful designs on steel plates. If I were teaching hand push, we would still be on...

Venting about carbide order- learning the hard way that 3/32” comes 20% oversize. So much grinding…

You might consider that the precious time spent running in circles trying to save $10 could have been spent practicing drawing or engraving. Even if a graver cost $100 ea you can do $25,000 worth of work with it. I will also say that I've been guilty of doing similar things, so I have no room...

Suggestions for an affordable watch worth engraving

There are numerous watch cases available on eBay. Take your pick. A popular one is an Explorer style case which is pretty beefy and has room for engraving. If you prefer one with a rotating bezel there are plenty of those as well, but the bezel should be removed prior to engraving. Be prepared...

    Looking for gravers

Pre-sharpened gravers or chisels is not a good way to go, even if there is such a thing. They will require sharpening shortly after you begin using them. Might be hours or minutes, depending on your engraving skill. Buy blank gravers and learn to sharpen. There's absolutely no way around this.

Question: Advice on developing an eye for determining the overall flow of a design

It's a difficult question to answer, and I'm not sure there is an answer. It's kind of liking asking "how do I learn to compose music tastefully?" So much comes from trial and error and a commitment to constant practice and study, and I don't mean 30 min a day. You pretty much have to be...

    Graver drift problems

If sharpening is accurate and symmetrical, then there's nothing I'm aware of that would cause a graver to drift. I'm assuming it's pilot error.

    Leica A60 eyepiece focus locks

Eyepiece focus locks for Leica A60 microscopes. The Leica A60 is one of the best bench microscopes I have ever used. I don't use a headrest so when my face touches the soft rubber eyecups, the eyepieces can turn a small amount and defocus. I CAD designed these focus locks to prevent this, and...
