Introduction notes on Affinity Designer 2 for engravers

Here is a set of notes that I made to help me remember where tools were located on my Windows computer in Affinity Designer 2 and how to use them. If you use a computer instead of an iPad, you may find them useful. Many of the tools are in the same place on a iPad but, because of the smaller...

    Traditional heel versus parallel heel

Thank you. That is an interesting comment about the traditional heel "locking in" to a straight line better than a parallel heel. It has been so long since I used a traditional heel that I need to go back and play with it. When I get some noggin time, I will work out the difference in angles at...

    Traditional heel versus parallel heel

Is there something that the traditional heel does for you on straight lines that the parallel heel does not? Or is it just that traditional heel works well on straight lines and is quicker to resharpen? If that is what it is, I can see that because time = money. I was initially trained using the...

    Traditional heel versus parallel heel

A traditional triangular heel is made with the graver rotated at the same angle that was used to shape the sides of the vee angle. As a result, when the graver is raised to the heel lift angle, only the point touches the hone and the heel is made only at the point of the graver and does not run...

Jeremiah Watt video on Preparing Liner Gravers

Attached are my notes on the video PREPARING LINER GRAVERS by Jeremiah Watt. He has graciously given permission to provide the notes to fellow engravers. Included is the URL for his video. If you use a multiline graver, it is worth your time to review the video and learn how to trim a curved...

    Help please! 75 degree graver

If you want full-sided parallel heels on the graver, rather than the short-sided traditional triangle heel, you will need to rotate the graver over more than the 52.5 degree side shape angle. Attached is a PDF showing required rotation angles for vee gravers in 5 degree increments from 60 to 130...

Critique Request Gift for my wife

I like the design itself, but I wonder about the advisability of having those sharp leaf tips out in the open. Might they snag on a sweater or other clothing? Maybe change them to rounded tips or move them so that the tips overlap something else and do not become snagworthy?

    Reversing graver sharpener.

My fixture also sits on the right side of the post, but that does not cause a problem. What fixture do you have? Can you post a photo of it in use?

    Reversing graver sharpener.

I am perplexed by this issue. Why does your fixture not work the same with a platen that turns in either direction? I have one of the newer GRS GraverHones that will turn in either direction and it works great in either direction. Is there a problem with the fixture? Is it loose when used with a...

A working Brother printer transfer method

You may want to mention what aftermarket toner you are successfully using with Brother printers. Unfortunately, it has been so long ago that I cannot say which aftermarket toner gave me the problems.

Mitch, did you mean PNP transfer film? Press-n-Peel?

A working Brother printer transfer method

RE: the use of aftermarket toner, I tried that a few years ago in several Brother printers and it was a disaster. The toner leaked out and screwed up prints. I had to completely clean all of the printers. Be aware that this can happen to you if you use something other than the Brother toner. The...

Most engravings that I see feature erect deer. Here are a couple that are resting. The photo was taken by my childhood friend Grover Wrenn in his back yard and is used with his permission

Question: Questions from a begginer - From instrument making to engraving

Nick, Sam Alfano has an excellent video on sharpening gravers, as well as engraving videos that target beginners up to experienced engravers. they are relatively inexpensive and include a lot of information applicable to the tasks involved. Monk is correct about the usefulness of some kind of...

    Heel drag issues

There is another question open right now relating to parallel heels. I just posted info on making them for any face angle, vee angle, and heel angle in that thread, so take a look there.

    Updated heel questions

You can make parallel heels with the dual angle fixture. Here is page 1 of the results for common graver angles. To get a parallel heel, you must rotate the graver over more than the shape angle to get the whole side down on the graver. This is a function of the face angle, the shape angle, and...

    Heel drag issues

You said that you are using the traditional heel, which is a short triangle. Unless you have a long heel, the triangle is small and the heel does not go very far up the sides. If you cut deeper than the heel, you end up with an issue. I suggest that you change to a parallel heel, where the heel...
