speedy, your observation is right on most of my gun work is on antique Winchesters the old time feel is necessary and my limited talents it may be all I can do.
Thanks,Leland
Thank you all for the comments, John B the finger notch in the handle keeps me from reversing the 2 scrolls on the left I will work on different scroll lay out. The right side is a tiny little script L D my initials.
Thanks,Leland
KG, nicely done the only 2 things that stand out to me is the leaf cluster at the top of the flask seems maybe a little redesign there would continue the flow better. Maybe another scroll with a few less leaves. The outside leaves on the cigar cutter come off at too abrupt of an angle,I see why...
monk, thanks for the insight there is no substitute for experience.
tolesh thanks for comments I tend to agree with you on the direction of the scrolls. I was trying to use the border of the oval like a starter scroll so it flowed around the scene will have to re think that approach.
Thanks,Leland
Archie, on the knives I take the scale off and just heat with a torch to a dull red then let it air cool seems to help. You get oxidation that way but I polish afterward and remove that.
Thanks,Leland
Karl, I do not harden after engraving. I don't see the need for a knife scale to be that hard. When I do reharden parts after engraving I do it in a pack to keep air off the parts no oxidation forms that way
Thanks,Leland
monk,I didn't explain myself very well just thought you knew about the Ken Onion knives. I would still like to know what your thoughts are on the design. What would you do change the design to something that flows better or give the customer what they asked for? With your experience has this...
monk, your advice is always valuable to me, the leek I am referring to is the knife, Ken Onion designed these for Kershaw and they played off his name the leek is the largest and there is a scallion and a chive. the flower is my poor rendition of a sunflower. The sunflower has become a part of...
Paps, here is a photo of the scale after annealing. The color is not bad I might try just polishing an oval for a game scene then bright cut thru the gray it might look good, or be a unmitigated disaster.Leland
My intention was to do a couple of these to get warmed up for a big project with animals and gold inlay. I did a deer first sold it and took an order for the moose. My wife posted pictures of the moose which led to the bear. The customer who ordered the bear was attacked by a brown bear in...
The dark gray was polished off before any lay out or cutting. I cut a bison on the scale today it cut much nicer with a lot less sharpening. That being said I am not sure if the annealing or the fact with the scale off the knife I could hold it better with less vibration either way it worked.
Leland
Thanks for the comments. It cut ok after sanding the coating off the outside but I did sharpen a lot. I have several of these to do today, I took the next one apart and annealed it much easier to cut.
