    Ball vice mount

A few quick fixes, Jonathan. 1) Use a higher or adjustable chair or stool. 2-3-4) Mount your vise on a GRS (or equal) Vise Shelf, shelf and adjustable height bracket or portable vise stand. Hope you enjoy your scope.

Wasn't sure where to introduce myself (new member)...lots of progress pics

Chip, looks good. Next time heat 'till bright red hot and bury it in a pan of clean sand (aquarium) or crushed charcoal to cool slowly. Will be softer and much easier to cut.

Well done Chip. look forward to seeing it relieved and shaded. Great practice piece and a nice, inexpensive display or decorative item. Would also make a good necklace for a guy, hung on a leather bootlace.

Airgraver / GRS / Enset for Jewellery?

Don, thank you for the update that the Lindsay Air Graver will run on an air brush compressor. Sorry for the misinformation, Juliet. I have not tried mine on one as I have a Sil Air 5 gallon "silent" compressor. And based on the number of times the Air graver recycles it I did not think my air...

Airgraver / GRS / Enset for Jewellery?

Hello Juliet, and welcome to the Cafe forum. I think you will find that any of the three pneumatic systems you mention will do the work you want to do. I strongly suggest that you try them all first before buying anything. Unfortunately, your air brush compressor will not produce enough volume...

    Question: Stippling for inlay

Thanks Jay, Growing up I was taught that it was spelled"burr." But it seems that the modern spelling is with just one R. I don't know for sure which is correct. Do you?

    Work holding

Just using a heat gun on the plate and pushing it down into a bed of hot melt glue works easily and cleanly.

    Question: Stippling for inlay

And it also depends on where and into what the inlay is going. A narrow line inlay will hold and stay with both sides of the channel undercut. A wide line inlay is best with undercuts and the addition of burs in the bottom of the channel. For firearms, animal or form inlays the security of a...

News, Problem for California firearms engravers.

Because the Cafe does not allow political discussion please see the FEGA forum if you are interested in this matter. California is proposing Assembly Bill 1064 which forbids the holding of a FFL license in a home or residence. As we know, most firearms engravers work out of their home. AB 1064...

    first try

No, a chalk board can be erased and re-drawn. A scratch board is like engraving, permanent. So you have to think and plan the line before making it because you can't change it. Another good practice, for the same reason, is pen and ink drawing. Pen and ink is cheap and always available. Two...

    Deep relief engraving

Hello Mike, Not if the initial design cuts are made to impart the degree of shine you want, and you don't run into them while making the second cuts or back ground removal cuts.

    bulino attempts

Leland, Some very good early attempts! Well done and thank you for sharing. Sandy gave you some good advise and the deer shows great improvement. The main problem with the deer is the shiny outline cuts outlining the antlers. Just a little lighter cutting and more study is needed in this area...

    Deep relief engraving

Hello Mike, and welcome to the engraving world. I am assuming you are talking about regular high relief engraving. The way I usually do it is to cut the design twice. First cut in the " normal" way with the cuts designed to accent the elements. Then I re-cut, leaning the graver into the...
