Thanks Jay,
Growing up I was taught that it was spelled"burr."
But it seems that the modern spelling is with just one R.
I don't know for sure which is correct. Do you?
And it also depends on where and into what the inlay is going.
A narrow line inlay will hold and stay with both sides of the channel undercut.
A wide line inlay is best with undercuts and the addition of burs in the bottom of the channel.
For firearms, animal or form inlays the security of a...

California is proposing Assembly Bill 1064 which forbids the holding of a FFL license in a home or residence.
As we know, most firearms engravers work out of their home. AB 1064...
No, a chalk board can be erased and re-drawn. A scratch board is like engraving, permanent.
So you have to think and plan the line before making it because you can't change it.
Another good practice, for the same reason, is pen and ink drawing.
Pen and ink is cheap and always available.

Hello Mike,
Not if the initial design cuts are made to impart the degree of shine you want, and you don't run into them while making the second cuts or back ground removal cuts.
Leland,
Some very good early attempts! Well done and thank you for sharing.
Sandy gave you some good advise and the deer shows great improvement.
The main problem with the deer is the shiny outline cuts outlining the antlers.
Just a little lighter cutting and more study is needed in this area...
Hello Mike, and welcome to the engraving world.
I am assuming you are talking about regular high relief engraving.
The way I usually do it is to cut the design twice.
First cut in the " normal" way with the cuts designed to accent the elements.
Then I re-cut, leaning the graver into the...
Not entirely, but you can help somewhat by very careful burnishing and scraping.
But maybe best to practice these techniques on a different plate first.
And I think you can improve the eye with some further study and gentle shading.
You have made a start, now more study and slow down on your...
Just trying to help.
Not trying to be a critic but I notice some pry marks on the side of your vise.
Be sure to polish or burnish down any metal that is raised on these edges or your ball vise won't rotate smoothly. Best of luck with what you are trying to do.
Hard to say if it will help your speed, not knowing your production rate now.
The fastest engravers I have ever seen were the Belgium FN factory engravers and also some of the English factory engravers. All using hammer and chisel.
But if you feel a pneumatic tool will make your life easier, go...
Hello Kim,
Thank you for sharing your early work.
A good try and a big help to other beginning engravers.
Two things I will point out on your second photo.
The center of the scroll is just one backbone line.
Easy fix...... cut the inside line of the backbone.
The other one is not an easy fix...
