Can you change your design to cut down the negative space? On lower budget jobs on guns I go with a full design that nearly eliminates background removal. Speeds up the process but still not fast but gives more bang for the buck.
drawing on the metal is the way to go. I have cut the outlines on a plate then used transfer wax and clear tape to transfer to the curved surface it works in some areas but drawing is faster.
I always have a fat sharpie on my bench. I just go over my work and wipe it off with my fingers before it dries just helps me see where I'm at. Last summer I went to town for parts and stopped in our local convenience store for an ice cream. I was standing in line behind the under sheriff in our...
Listen to Mitch and Allan for me the Lindsay 116 universal template does almost everything I need only changing the face angle for different hardness of the steel.
Marc, I really like your knife. When doing hard stainless I have found vibration is a carbide tool killer. In my experience taking the scale off and pressing it into a thick layer of molten hot glue on a hardwood block helps. the block should be thick enough to be against the bottom of the vise...
Dave's experience is what I had too. I was using them on stainless Vaquero broke a lot of them until I started drawing back the temper. In fairness to the tools Ruger stainless is pretty hard.
Tira;s punches are great quality but like John said they are not for gun work. I use them but I put them in my heat treat oven at 400f and let them cool slowly seems to work for me your results may vary.
Basswood is what we start people with in class it carves easy and will hold detail and is inexpensive. The fact you want to work with English walnut it cuts very nice. I would start there but find a stock maker and try to get some scraps for practice. I went to Lee Griffiths site I will bet he...
Matthew, YouTube is full of bas relief carving tutorials. I teach carving classes for our local arts council, not because I'm good at it just knew more than anyone else in the group. There are several muzzleloader builders videos that cover rococo carving. Think C and S scrolls in wood. Carving...
Paps, you really should take the scale off the knife and back it to set the copper. With the knife together you have gaps that will not give the support needed. On hard stainless it helps with vibration too less broken tips.
Cut it. You have shown great discipline on this project but at some point you have to go with your instincts and do it. I liked your last design too. Ultimately it's your deal. I look forward to the finished piece.
Happy New Year to everyone hope you all have safe and prosperous year. Hopefully we can put this pandemic behind us this year. We have a temp of 6 above here but the wind chill is 25 below and 6 was our high for the day.
In answer to my own question the titanium scales on Michael Zieba custom knives cut like butter. I did find them a little sticky switching to a 3000grit lap seemed to eliminate that problem.
