Bella at her post as my apprentice right before she lead me astray. She convinced me we needed to go find some quail, I'm easily distracted. How many of you have working companion helping in the shop? Let's see some pics.

Mitch, I remember the laser print post now, and yep I probably have a lifetime supply of film. I don't use it often. The fixxon sheets worked perfect for the mirror image though.
Thanks
Mitch, I switched to Fixxon transparency film around 30 bucks for 100 sheets. The thing is I have better transfer with it than pictorico film, your mileage may vary.
Thanks
Thank you all for the responses. I used Mitch's low tech method for this job and low tech is always better for me. I found a tutorial of how to do it in word I could flip every way but horizontal.
Thanks again, Leland
Paps, I don't know if you do this but when I was starting to engrave hand cramps were a problem. I finally realized that fear of slipping caused me to white knuckle my hand piece. When I relaxed my grip on it my hands didn't cramp and I think I had better control. Hold the hand piece don't crush...
Roger, you are right this was perpetrated by the owner. JJ when I am trying to save a gun that was restored poorly and get frustrated sometimes I stop and think if people weren't doing stupid stuff I might have to get a real job.

John B I buy a new Nicholson Handy File when I start a project. Nothing fancy and cheap about 10 bucks but will stay sharp long enough to finish a job. The handy file has a double cut on one side and a medium single cut on the other. The double cut removes stock fast then smooth with single cut...
Thanks all for the comments. Monk, I measured before starting removed about 17 thousands. The prior work is not completely gone but enough to not be too noticeable. The 1899 has a lot of heft in the frame to work with. A good sharp file and 20 minutes and no more deer.

This Savage 99 had been engraved before with a round chisel and a big hammer some of the progression marks were an 1/8in long. Draw filed off what I could and designed this to cover the rest.

Dan, thanks for the kind words but I don't think I have the right gearing to do what you and Marty, Samw and countless others do. What steel do use for your bulino tools? HSS or carbide?
When I applied for my FFL I told the agent that came for the inspection what I intended to do, engraving and restoration. She told me I could not do that with a class 01 license. I would need a class 7 manufacturing license so that's what I got. She was wrong but not knowing any better I did...
