I read the first sentence in the preceding paragraph not as being one’s worse critic but instead of being able to see what others see. the mirror lesson is one I learned nearly 40 years ago. As a starving college student I decided to paint a portrait of my parents as a Christmas gift. Mind...
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I guess I will go with the fine line shading on the rifle. Still tweaking my ‘bulino’. Tough to get just the right shading.
Your welcome. Seems as though you are on the right path. I started with Chris’s videos too. BTW, I am a retired engineer and never an artist, don’t underestimate what you can do with time, practice and determination.
Hi John. 1st and foremost, never give up.... :hammerchisel:
I’m not exactly sure what help your asking about and not sure of your other pieces look like. Have you done any scroll work? Are you push engraving or using power assist? Without knowing about your background I will just talk to a...
Thought that I should work on some less expensive pieces before jumping into the rifle. I shared the design here over a year ago. I know that it was not everyone’s favorite (not even mine), but thought it would be a good test.
Question - is this type of shading too fine for a rifle? Fewer...
Your welcome. The next thing to notice is the distance between each leaf/tendril. On Sam’s maim scroll I count 13 leaf/tendrils and on yours I count 8. While there is nothing technically wrong with dead space between features most people like to have more leaves and less dead space.
papart1, perhaps this picture will help clarify. look At the red lines in each. As Sam said his leaves and tendrils are only separated from the adjacent backbone by a cut width unlike yours.
Hi Papart1, I assume you are referring to a scroll starting from an ‘inside’ portion of a scroll rather than the outside of the backbone? In my attached pic the red lines showbeginning from the outside backbone and the blue line shows starting from ’inside. If you are referring to something...
Yes, much better. Proper flow and good individual scrolls. As Sam said time to start filling different predetermined shapes. As you do so look for balance. In your design the two large scrolls overpower the others. Perhaps in your design the left large scroll could be replaced with two or...
To illustrate Sam and Monk’s point here is your backbones with correct directional transitions. The red lines in the second pic shows the smooth transition you should be creating.
I don’t understand . You tried to draw it but could not see the lines?
Choosing to scribe directly onto the slide is a very difficult approach. Basically it is a one shot deal since you have already prepped and polished the slide. If you cut on the scribe lines then you have one shot to...
Also, when practicing and learning I have dome things like turn off all layers except background just to be sure I don’t have imbalance. Or I turn off all except the shading for the same reason. Of course I don’t think you will find any seasoned professional that needs to or is willing to take...
A few years ago I switched from paper and pencil to Procreate and my designs improved exponentially. Of course you will still need to practice and practice but with Procreate you can erase, change, add, layer, over and over and over. For example,
start with an outline of the part to engrave...
Hi Flintdoubles. After comparing the overlay it appeared that the proportion was mostly off between the head and front shoulder and then the height of the back. I did a quick tweak to your engraving to illustrate. I changed nothing other than the proportion. Keep up the good work.
