My question would be - why would the die be reworked in such a way as you are suggesting? It doesn’t correct anything and does not improve the final image, right? An attempt to deface the die to mint collectors items?
Very interesting. I expect that using the hand graver in a more vertical orientation should allow for nice bulino dots. And love the idea of an angled collet for stippling...
Hi jzknives, yes, I guess pretty much all metal can be engraved and yes I guess the plastic can be engraved. So, I guess the difference is between, “can be” and ”will be”.
I’m curious how many professional hand engravers attribute even 5% of their income from engraving black Guns.?
Dan
Thanks everyone.
Monk, yep guilty of both charges. Probably always will be.... I already changed the eyes a bit. Will require some re-shading but I think the mirror images are better now?
Speedy, thanks for the observation and suggestion. Is this better? The shadowed ear in the attached...
Lots of black guns. I didn’t see any wood. Does not seem good for hand engraving, at least in the near term.....

I am making a keepsake for my wife. It is an engraving of her late brother on the back of a silver quarter. As you might expect I want it to be the best that I can do and I would like some advice. what Am I missing? What needs work? odd that the right cheek is washed out on all the pics...
Picture is worth 1,000 words. I think John would agree with some of my illustrated points.
first, what you drew is not a scroll, it is leaves working out of a circle. My wife just saw your design and said “pretty”. Which it is ,,, but it is not scrolls.
in the first picture of your...
I think it is a very interesting and nice design. John is correct, it does not adhere to typical or traditional scroll designs or design rules. But it is very imaginative, very well laid out and consistent from top to bottom and side to side.
you picked an amazingly difficult geometric shape...
Looks great Marty. It does not have the ‘Marty’ Leaf structure that we all know and love but it is a really nice change.
as someone who has been playing golf almost every day for the last two months I can say that I would be proud to use it on the course.
Thanks Sam and JJ.
thanks papart1. Others can chime in as well but I would not jump to the conclusion you stated. First, this Winchester is not my favorite design. I was going for a very leafy and flowing design but generally prefer something a little more traditional and structured with...
Interesting. I have often thought that tattooers would make good engravers and visa versa. I have never seen a tattoo shop with microscopes so I would be in trouble if I tried to make the switch. . keep up the good work.
Dan
Thanks John and Papart1. I don’t have any progression photo’s of the scroll work. I attached a few of the moose scene. I had not originally planned to have a cow in the scene but I didn’t want the bull to be compromised by the pin and screw so I moved the bull to the right and added a cow...
I agree with John. Your graver control is very good. I’d even say exceptional for only a year. Just a few places where the spacing between shade lines are not consistent. How is your designing coming? Someone once told me, ‘mediocre cutting of an exceptional design is often more pleasing...
It was suggested that I post a couple more pictures of the Winchester 94 that I used for illustration in another post. Sorry if you have seen them before.
