I agree with Marty. The illusion of white on steel is a mater of contrast. I do believe however that a burnisher can make the metal appear lighter and even whiter. I blew up the previous photo for illustration. Look at the “white” lines in the belly. Those are burnished marks. The...
I made a micro-burnishing tool from an old graver. Used it in a push graver to make little white lines and dots. Took a while to make but works great.

I agree with John. Generally good scrolls, kind of a mix of leaf structures but assume it was for practice. I like to have more mature leaves near the base of the scroll and more tendril type structures toward the tip. But that is more of my preference rather than a rule. More of a natural...
TOS, I couldn’t imagine drawing something so detailed and beautiful directly on metal. Even if I could design something like that it would take 200 hours and many changes, fixes and do-overs. Great job!
Thanks John and Marty.
Marty, I am simply using pins in the vice. What looks like a wide screw slot in the middle is actually just the gap between two jaws. Nice optical illusion.
not sure what to do with the concave side around the circumference. I would need some way of holding it at an...
Papart1, while many of us struggle to reproduce art, Fancygun, TOS, Lee, Phil and many others on this site create art. Asking them them how they do it is like asking the moon how it creates romance. It just does, and they just do..... sometimes I just sit back and enjoy the view of each.. ( l...
Thanks Marty. Your answer implies that your answer would be different for a rifle. I’m worried that the fine line shading will be lost with most gun finishes. BTW I used rustoleum on the fine line shaded side to eliminate the need for best viewing angle.
Working on the flip side of my knife. Since it is mine and for practice I thought I would use coarser shade lines on this side. Still trying to figure out which to use on the rifle design which has more traditional scrolls. Thoughts?
First, much better than my early drawings..... and yes, you are on the right path with drawing first. Keep up the good work.
a couple of points though :
1) This is a pretty complex design for early on. A better simple design is more pleasing than a complex poor design. However, with that...
Thanks Monk and Papart1.
Travis, I use the Lindsay templates. The knife shading was with a 116 degree parallel point. The tip was small but not as small as my bulino tips. I polish the flats to mirror but leave the top at 600 grit because it seems to allow me to see the point better as I...
Thanks Marty. I will see what I can come up with to make it pop but I don’t have an artist eye like you.
hoping to see more pics of what others are working on.

Google tribal vine tattoo for good ideas. (I didn’t want to post a copy righted pic here) . Cut the perimeter then background relief the center. On the piece below I filled with black epoxy and then re-sanded but could potentially use black paint or ink.
