very neat lookin bird, jj. i also like the simplicity with which you do the work. a lesson to newbies ? should be ! the kiss principle does work for those willing to give it a whack.
welcome to the forum. i'm not sure about the gmax. what metals are you engraving ? show closeup fotos of the graver points. that could provide some idea why you're having trouble. btw-- engraving that's properly done need not be very deep. a lot of what appears to be deep is an illusion provided...
monica: you can solder common xacto gouges onto a brass rod to use with yer foredom hammer. the trick is to keep the blade front in water to keep it cool whilst sodering the rod onto it. easy to do with a pair of stout haemostats or other gripping device.
there are, or USED TO BE, solid brass zippos. the few i've done cut nicely with no problems. i have also engraved plated zippos. some were ok,. one was a disaster. i no longer will do platied items. even if the client accepts the risk. if one starts a plated item, maybe you have a couple hours...
monica: jmho-- if one is a newbie, i'd think resharpening a round graver blank would present the very first problem. true, most of us can take any blank shape, make it .125 in diameter at the back end, and then have a fling with it. most noobs would not ( in my opinion ) be able to get useful...
i'm not sure any "special" preparation is called for. i'd just take the metal "down" to the desired final finish you want, ie the final grit/polish level you want on the finished piece. it's not good to engrave, then go over that to achieve a final surface finish. doing such will likely damage...
welcome. the schippers book was a very good start. for front stuffers, there's no better book. you'll find a lot of predjuce here regarding grrs/lindsay/ and a couple others. they are all good. each system will do what your hand wills it to do. i think you should look at the tips section, the...
curious to know which depth you use. the .062 plastic i use allows maybe .o25- .030 depth. i find the panto work is kind of tricky to do when the depth gets too shallow.most of mine were cut by hand. i got smart, scan my dwgs into corel, convert to .plt file, then send to my cnc engraving...
it is an addiction. i do all sorts of commercial engraving, signmaking, oil painting, sculpture, & bla, bla, bla. per unit of time, the commercial work brings in better bucks for me. the hand engraving soothes my soul far better than the comercial dollars. the hand engraving would be the last...
